They are known as men of silence and wonder, men of the strict observance of the rule. Modern day Trappists find their roots in a Cistercian mother that brought the spirit of St. Benedict back to the letter of the rule. This little “Saga of Citeaux” offers an insightful glimpse into the lives of 3 Rebellious Monks that brought new life to St. Benedict’s rule with the ideal of “simplicity, poverty and solitude”.

Written as a dramatic dialogue, this book illuminates the lives of St. Robert, St. Alberic and St. Stephen Harding, who taught the first Cistercians how to be “gallant to God” and make “no compromises.” Love for God and complete surrender to his will moved these three rebels to take chances in order to make reparation to the Sacred Heart by “making God forget” those who don’t remember Him in their daily lives.

The story’s inspiring phrases encourage the reader in his own spiritual life. For the religious, he is inspired to follow his own rule with as much love and fervor as these men lived-out on their road to sanctity.

I read this book, on the advice of my spiritual director, and only after reading The Family that Overtook Christ. This is the first of a 3 book saga, with The Family that Overtook Christ being the second and Burnt Out Incense (The saga of Citeaux. American Epoch) being the third book in the series. The second of the trilogy was written first by Fr. M. Raymond, and then followed by this first book, which is amazing just as the other was. M. Raymond has a great way of writing so that you are captured by this stories withing the first 2 - 3 pages of the book. No author has ever managed to do that for me, whether it be Sci-Fi, mysteries, etc. He is an absolutely great writer with a profound message. These books are specifically about the founding and development of the Trappist/Cisternian Order through the eyes of the Saints who formed and nourished it. In this book you read about St. Robert of Molesme, St. Alberic of Citeaux, and St. Stephen Hawking. You very quickly forget that these are Saints and in no time, find yourself relating to these great human beings. All of a sudden the hopes of obtaining sainthood, don't seem so far out of reach, because you now realize that these people were real human beings with weaknesses, temptations and struggles, just as the rest of us. The only difference being that their eyes and hearts were completely focused on Christ, Himself; and in reading these books, you learn how to be more Christ-like, if simply be learning to be more like the Saints, who themselves never lost sight of Christ. For me, I love seeing WHO (family, friends, colleagues, etc) helped in the Saint's reach for sainthood. It's made me more aware of those around me who are walking with me towards the same end. These books are truly books that I will never get rid of, but will always recommend to others, with the first of them being my own children.

Three Religious Rebels eBook M Raymond Reviews

I received this as a version. It is very good.
This is the first of four books from the "Saga of Citeaux". The history of the making of the trappist religious order. A book you cannot put down when you read what they suffered and sacrificed to reach their goals. I cannot praise it enought, you must read, easily written and great for young and old. Highly recommend.
I confess I am just beginning to reread this book. I first read it 46 years ago when I was starting out on my journey in Religious Life. It is a very interesting and informative read about the origins of the Trappist Monks now famous for fruit cakes, cheeses, and beers. This is the Order than the late Thomas Merton belonged to in Gethsemane, KY. If you are into Church History particularly of the pre-Middle Ages era, you will enjoy this book.
This novel presents the lives of three Saints who lead one of the great monastic reforms of the middle ages. Its presentation of the love which drives monks to perfection and sacrifice will appeal most to men and boys as it is militaristic, disciplined and lacks the sweet syrup which some spiritual writers drench their books with which can be hard to stomach especially if you are a man.

Other than presenting these stories the author does a wonderful job of explaining certain aspects of the spiritual life through conversations and meditations that the characters have. For example why intelligence and faith are not opponents, all truth leads to God, faithlessness and the problems of the world etc. The courage, fortitude, and simple aim of the characters to live the Benedictine rule in its full vigor should inspire all people to be faithful to their duties of state to a letter even if the world dismisses them as a fanatic.

The book has a few things that I would have changed though. I wish the story had annotations and sources as this would would help people be able to absolutely distinguish between what is an actual part of these characters lives vs additions of the author. This is not important if you are strongly familiar with the Saints lives but it would be helpful if I lent out the book (ironically it is some of the incredible miracles in the book that are true and it would be nice if this was emphasized to the reader). Also, the book does have some rather cheesy dialogue here and there and makes a use of cliches as well. The book also when conveying some of the truths previously mentioned that are so edifying the conversations can seem manufactured.

However, despite these criticisms I would recommend the book or even reread parts of it again.
It has been years ago that a read this book but I love the spirit of the early monks. They truly had a heart for God. This is the only book I have ever read twice and will be sure to keep it on my book shelf. How to Journal for Hope and Happiness Journey to the Christian Heart in 5 Simple Steps
Three Religious Rebels brings the facts about the founders of the monastery at Citeaux to life by using known facts and incorporating them in novel form. It is a most entertaining and informative look at the beginnings of the Cistercian (Trappist) Order of Monks. Saints Robert, Alberic, and Stephen are portrayed as very real men. There story is as compulsive a read as I have experienced. I would highly reccommend it to anyone interested in the pioneer spirit in men driven by ideals, presented in a very appealing, emotionally wringing setting.
I was completely satisfied with the service and product provided by 3rd St. Books. As soon as the order was placed the product was immediately shipped. It arrived well in advance of my expectations, well packaged and in better condition than stated by the modest proprietor of 3rd St. Book . I will have no hesitations in dealing with this vendor anytime in the future. Thank You.
